Internship - Controls Technician

Under general supervision you will be responsible for assisting in hardware and software designs and programming of HVAC control and other low voltage systems to meet the intent of the project requirements. You will be required to assist in the design of complex software programs and provide detailed information. You will be responsible for providing submittals for customers, consultants, field teams and subcontractors.

  • Selecting hardware designs from several different control vendors.
  • Develop HVAC equipment drawings, schedules, submittals, sequences of operations, material lists, network layouts, electrical schematics, and as built drawings.
  • Software and graphic programming.
  • Understand agreements and work scope.
  • Assist in compiling cost estimates and preparing proposals.
  • Provide technical recommendations on projects.
  • Work with other technicians and mechanics.
  • Aggressively perform continuous self-study to maintain a competitive edge in the industry and company's standards, practices, and product lines.
  • Complete certifications as required.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills to effectively represent the company in an ethical and professional manner and consistent with our values and mission.
  • Exhibit technical aptitude and advanced computer skills. Skills should include but not be limited to MS Office (excel, word, power point), Adobe Writer, Visio, and basic Windows.
  • Able to travel. This will vary on project assignment.
  • Perform material ordering and verification.
  • Assist in providing direction and support to field teams in the installation and execution of contracts.
  • Perform and assist in the commissioning of the controls and associated equipment.
  • Provide assistance to design engineers and project managers during all project phases.
  • Aggressively adhere to the required safety standards and requirements of the company and our customers.
  • Actively participate in programs, policies and initiatives designed to enhance the overall good of the company and corporation.
  • Knowledge of industry programs as required to remain competitive.
  • Understanding of PID Loops and Control Tuning.
  • Understanding of Variable Frequency Drives and Parameters.
  • Knowledge of basic electricity theory and electronic gate logic.

Experience/Education Requirements:

  • High School or GED. Associate degree in Electronics or related technical field preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of engineering fundamentals, commissioning, HVAC concepts and business operations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A valid Driver's License

Physical Demands / Work Environment

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Primarily a stationary position for a considerable portion of the day (sitting and/or standing). The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer. Must be able to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings.
  • Travel to project sites, or other APi Group company locations as needed.
  • The employee will occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.

Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in plant and/or customer environments. PPE required when in the plant, yard, customer, or construction areas include:

  • Hard Hat
  • Safety Glasses / Goggles
  • Steel-toed Boots
  • High Visibility Vest
  • Hearing Protection (designated areas)
  • Gloves
  • Personal Fall Arrest Harness (as applicable)
